While there are more ways than ever to connect online, we are facing a loneliness epidemic with real world consequences. The goal of The Neighbor Networks (TNN) is to utilize some of the benefits of technology to more effectively create in person interpersonal experiences.Research into "Blue Zones" where people are shown to live longer, healthier lives, reveals a strong connection to overall sense of community belonging, sense of purpose, and strong social connections.
Yet in our modern world we're often living further from family and are largely disconnected from our neighbors. Furthermore, historical means of connection are falling by the wayside or exist in an online format that doesn't include the benefit of real time interaction. It can be a matter of having hundreds of friends online, but no one you can call to borrow a cup of sugar. While some of us do belong to communities with strong relationships, rituals, and a healthy level of interdependence, these special spaces seem to be more the exception than the rule. At TNN we've built a tool that we hope can close the gap that exists between the increase in connection online and the decrease in in person connection.
Our sign-up process enables us to facilitate groups based on geography and limit group size to create the best chance for real life interaction in a manageable group size. We hope to empower each group and group member to create a network culture that works well for them. Furthermore, we've consulted with experienced mental health professionals to provide guidelines and support in the hopes of establishing groups of neighbors that contribute positively to each other's lives as well as the health of the overall community in which they live.
TNN is a grassroots passion project started by a mental health professional who saw both the devastating impact of loneliness and the protective impact of community in her own life and the lives of her clients.
The Neighbor Networks connects those who live near one another and desire more connection with their neighbors.
Members will be connected with one another when at least 5 people in the same geographic area join. Then more members will be added until the group reaches 50 members.
At that time the group will be closed to allow members to form a sense of community. The result is manageable, hyperlocal groups, that have self-selected to participate in creating more connection in their neighborhood.
