Our Mission

While there are more ways than ever to connect online, we are facing a loneliness epidemic with real world consequences. The goal of The Neighbor Networks (TNN) is to utilize some of the benefits of technology to more effectively create in person interpersonal experiences.Research into "Blue Zones" where people are shown to live longer, healthier lives, reveals a strong connection to overall sense of community belonging, sense of purpose, and strong social connections.
Yet in our modern world we're often living further from family and are largely disconnected from our neighbors. Furthermore, historical means of connection are falling by the wayside or exist in an online format that doesn't include the benefit of real time interaction. It can be a matter of having hundreds of friends online, but no one you can call to borrow a cup of sugar. While some of us do belong to communities with strong relationships, rituals, and a healthy level of interdependence, these special spaces seem to be more the exception than the rule. At TNN we've built a tool that we hope can close the gap that exists between the increase in connection online and the decrease in in person connection.
Our sign-up process enables us to facilitate groups based on geography and limit group size to create the best chance for real life interaction in a manageable group size. We hope to empower each group and group member to create a network culture that works well for them. Furthermore, we've consulted with experienced mental health professionals to provide guidelines and support in the hopes of establishing groups of neighbors that contribute positively to each other's lives as well as the health of the overall community in which they live.

FAQs

Why cap each group at 50?

Chevron
This number comes from the work of Robin Dunbar who extensively researched social connections and group dynamics. "Dunbar's number" refers to the number of people he discovered can work together cooperatively, cohesively, and successfully. Anything higher and group norms, relationships, and rituals begin to break down. He also studied the apparent limits most of us have for how many intimate relationships we can maintain. Capping each neighbor network at 50 is a way to meet in the middle of Dunbar's number for a cohesive business (150 employees) and the number of "good friends" most people have (15).

Who runs the groups?

Chevron
How your Neighbor Network operates will be completely up to you the other members. Tools and suggestions for how to successfully engage with community members are offered as part of membership. However, ultimate autonomy and authority will always be in the hands of group members. Membership and participation are all voluntary.

What if I have a problem with a group member?

Chevron
It is normal for conflicts and misunderstanding to occur in any group. Tools and suggestions for successful conflict resolution will be accessible once you become a member. It is likely that most conflicts can be resolved and/or personal adjustments can be made to avoid the same issues in the future.

Can I use this for dating?

Chevron
While this platform could result in a dating relationship we would not suggest joining if that is your primary intention. TNN's primary mission is to help provide a means for individuals who desire a deeper sense of community to connect with one another, create more cohesiveness, provide the sense of safety that comes from familiarity, and cooperate in ways that allow for growth.

What if I don't like my group?

Chevron
As is sometimes the case when people meet they don't always click. This doesn't necessarily mean a positive, cooperative relationship is not possible. As part of TNN you will be provided with tools that may help you navigate getting to know your group members and deal with challenges. You are free to leave your network at any time. If you choose to leave there will be a waiting period before you can attempt to enter a new network and there will be no guarantee that new networks are forming at that time.

How do you screen who can join?

Chevron
We don't. While we believe the potential waiting period, address authentication, and overall agreement of intention required to join TNN help discourage those with ill intent, there is no way to completely avoid this possibility. Part of the benefit of the limited group size is the potential for more familiarity that it provides. This could include learning more about who you would like to connect with more as well as who you would like to connect with less. Shared knowledge amongst group members along with social encouragement to participate positively provide an additional measure of security.

What is TNN?

TNN is a grassroots passion project started by a mental health professional who saw both the devastating impact of loneliness and the protective impact of community in her own life and the lives of her clients.

The Neighbor Networks connects those who live near one another and desire more connection with their neighbors.

Members will be connected with one another when at least 5 people in the same geographic area join. Then more members will be added until the group reaches 50 members.

At that time the group will be closed to allow members to form a sense of community. The result is manageable, hyperlocal groups, that have self-selected to participate in creating more connection in their neighborhood.
